Our Approach

Anxiety & Depression

Anxiety and depression are not simply thought patterns. They are patterned nervous system responses, a body stuck in alarm or shutdown. SOMA's integrative approach combines EMDR, somatic experiencing, and polyvagal-informed care to address the root cause, not just the symptoms.

This content is educational and informational. It is not psychotherapy, medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment, and it is not a substitute for care from a licensed professional. Reading this page does not create a therapist-client relationship with SOMA. If you are in crisis, call or text 988 or call 911.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Anxiety & Depression

Why can't I just think my way out of anxiety or depression?

Because anxiety and depression are patterned nervous system responses, not failures of willpower or logic. If you wake already braced for the day and carry a low-grade alarm that never fully quiets, that is your autonomic system talking, not your reasoning. Anxiety is often a chronically activated threat response, and depression is often a collapsed, shutdown state. Both are intelligent adaptations to circumstances that once overwhelmed you. At SOMA, we work directly with the body to discharge stored activation and restore your capacity for genuine rest, rather than asking you to reason your way free.

Are anxiety and depression a sign of a character flaw?

No. They are not weakness or a defect in who you are. They are the nervous system doing what it learned to do to protect you: staying on high alert or dropping into shutdown when life felt like too much. Read that way, your symptoms make sense instead of being proof that something is wrong with you. The system that learned to protect you can also learn something new. At SOMA, we treat these states as understandable and changeable, and we start by mapping what your nervous system is actually doing.

Why aren't cognitive approaches alone enough?

Talking and reframing can help, but they often do not reach the layer where anxiety and depression actually live: the body and the autonomic nervous system. You can understand exactly why you feel the way you do and still feel it. That is why SOMA pairs cognitive work with EMDR and Somatic Experiencing, which address the underlying experiences that trained your system into its current pattern. We keep the pace inside what your system can integrate, so change happens at a rate that settles you rather than floods you.

Does SOMA use EMDR for anxiety and depression?

Yes. EMDR addresses the experiences that trained your nervous system into anxiety or depression in the first place, rather than only managing the symptoms on the surface. It helps reprocess the material that keeps your system on high alert or in collapse. We pair it with Somatic Experiencing and window of tolerance work so change unfolds at a pace your system can absorb, not one that overwhelms it. The aim is a nervous system flexible enough to move through difficult feelings instead of getting locked inside them.

Is the goal to never feel anxious or sad again?

No. The goal is not the absence of difficult feelings. Sadness and worry are part of being human. What changes in this work is your relationship to them: instead of being stuck in chronic activation or shutdown, your nervous system regains the capacity to move through a hard feeling and return to baseline. You become flexible rather than flooded, and grounded enough to trust that you can handle what arises. At SOMA, that flexibility, not the erasure of emotion, is what recovery looks like.
