Our Approach

The Burnout Reset

Burnout is not a motivation problem. It is HPA axis dysregulation, a nervous system that has been running at maximum capacity for too long. At SOMA, we address the root cause through polyvagal-informed care, somatic resourcing, and nervous system restoration.

This content is educational and informational. It is not psychotherapy, medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment, and it is not a substitute for care from a licensed professional. Reading this page does not create a therapist-client relationship with SOMA. If you are in crisis, call or text 988 or call 911.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Burnout

Why didn't taking time off fix my burnout?

Because burnout is not a productivity problem, it is a nervous system problem. Chronic stress dysregulates the HPA axis, disrupts your sleep architecture, and traps your system in a loop where it loses the ability to return to baseline. A vacation does not reset that loop, which is why you can step away and come back feeling exactly the same. Genuine recovery comes from targeted nervous system work that restores your capacity to cycle between activation and real rest. That capacity is not gone. It can be rebuilt with the right support.

Does burnout mean something is broken in me?

No. Burnout is what happens when a capable nervous system runs at maximum output for too long without adequate recovery. It is an adaptation, not a defect. Your body kept meeting demand until it had to start conserving energy, which is why you feel depleted, flat, and unable to care the way you used to. Reading these signals as personal failure keeps you stuck. Reading them as a system asking for restoration opens the door to change. At SOMA, we treat burnout at the root rather than blaming you for it.

What does nervous system dysregulation actually feel like?

Many people describe it as feeling exhausted but wired: biologically drained, yet unable to switch off the internal engine. Sleep brings no real restoration. You keep performing competence while running on empty, and things that once felt meaningful now feel hollow. You might notice physical tension, frequent illness, or a fatigue that rest does not touch. These are signs of a system stuck in chronic survival, not proof that you are weak. They are treatable, and they tend to ease as regulation returns to your nervous system.

What does SOMA's approach to burnout recovery involve?

SOMA offers neuro-informed care that addresses burnout at the biological, psychological, and relational levels at once. We use Polyvagal Theory as the clinical map for understanding your autonomic state, and we work to systematically widen your window of tolerance so your system can handle stress and still return to baseline. Recovery here is not about doing less or trying harder. It is about restoring your nervous system's natural rhythm between effort and genuine rest. We pace the work to what your system can integrate, not to a calendar.

Can I get burnout support virtually, or do I need to be in Florida?

SOMA sees adult clients (18 and older) in person at our Coral Gables office and virtually by telehealth. We are licensed to provide telehealth to residents of Florida, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Massachusetts, and Indiana. SOMA is private pay and out of network. We can provide a superbill for possible out-of-network reimbursement, and HSA and FSA funds are often eligible. Rates are shared during your consultation, so you have a clear picture before deciding whether to begin.
