Our Approach

Understanding Complex Trauma

Complex trauma is not a character flaw, it is a nervous system that learned to protect you and never received the signal to stop. At SOMA, we integrate EMDR, Somatic Experiencing, and polyvagal-informed care to help your system complete what it could not complete alone.

This content is educational and informational. It is not psychotherapy, medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment, and it is not a substitute for care from a licensed professional. Reading this page does not create a therapist-client relationship with SOMA. If you are in crisis, call or text 988 or call 911.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Complex Trauma

Why won't my nervous system stand down when I am safe?

Because complex trauma teaches the nervous system to run a survival program, and that program keeps running until it receives a clear signal that the danger has passed. You can be resting in your own living room while your heart races as if a threat were imminent. This is not structural brokenness. It is an intelligent loop written in a different time, for a different danger. At SOMA, the work is helping your system recognize that the original threat is over, so it can finally let the old program rest.

How is complex trauma different from single-incident PTSD?

Single-incident PTSD usually follows one overwhelming event. Complex trauma develops from experiences that repeated or continued over time, often in relationships you could not simply leave. Because it accumulated, it tends to shape your baseline sense of safety, your self-image, and how your body responds to ordinary situations. That is why you might feel calm on the surface yet exhausted underneath. At SOMA, we treat this as the predictable neurological outcome of what you lived through, not a flaw, and we pace the work to your system's readiness.

I have tried talk therapy and it made things worse. Why?

For complex trauma, describing what happened can sometimes intensify the distress, because the survival response lives in the body and nervous system, not only in conscious memory. Talking about the event can activate the system without giving it a way to complete or settle. That does not mean you are untreatable. It means the approach has to work with the body directly. SOMA uses EMDR, Somatic Experiencing, and Polyvagal Theory to update how your system responds in the present, and we keep you inside your window of tolerance throughout.

Does EMDR actually work for complex trauma and C-PTSD?

Yes. SOMA uses EMDR alongside Somatic Experiencing to process complex trauma without flooded re-traumatization. Before any reprocessing begins, we establish a clear picture of your current autonomic state, then pace the work to keep it integrative rather than overwhelming. The goal is not to erase the past. It is to update your nervous system's threat assessment so the past no longer governs the present. Deeper complex-trauma work often unfolds over a longer arc than single-incident trauma, and we stay explicit with you about direction and progress throughout.

How long does complex trauma therapy take?

There is no single timeline. Structural nervous system change takes time, careful pacing, and a consistent therapeutic relationship, so SOMA does not rush the process. Deeper complex-trauma work generally unfolds over a longer arc than single-incident trauma, and pushing faster than your system can integrate tends to backfire. We pace to your nervous system's readiness rather than to a calendar, and we are clear with you about direction and progress along the way, so you always know where the work is heading.
