Our Approach

From Dysregulation to Resilience

SOMA translates polyvagal theory, heart rate variability science, and autonomic regulation into accessible clinical practice. We help you understand your own nervous system, its patterns, its protective strategies, and its capacity for change, so that healing is not abstract but felt. Every intervention we offer is designed to expand your window of tolerance and build the resilience your system needs to thrive.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Nervous System Regulation

What does it mean when my nervous system is dysregulated?

Dysregulation is not a sign that something is wrong with you. It means your nervous system is doing exactly what it learned to do to keep you safe, just at times when the danger has passed. Polyvagal theory describes how your body constantly scans for cues of safety or threat, often below conscious awareness. When it reads threat, it shifts into mobilization or shutdown. At SOMA we help you recognize these states as intelligent, not broken, and then build the capacity to return to a settled, regulated baseline more often.

How does nervous system regulation actually work?

Regulation is not about forcing yourself to calm down. Your autonomic nervous system moves between states of activation and rest, and trauma can leave it stuck in one gear. Regulation is the felt skill of moving flexibly between those states again. It grows through repeated experiences of safety, co-regulation with a steady other, and practices that speak the body's language rather than the mind's. At SOMA we translate polyvagal science into concrete tools, so that over time your system widens its range and recovers from stress more quickly.

What is the window of tolerance?

The window of tolerance is the zone where you can feel and think at the same time, staying present with difficulty without becoming flooded or numb. When you are pushed above it, you may feel anxious, panicked, or on high alert. When you drop below it, you may feel foggy, heavy, or shut down. Neither is a failure. It is your system protecting you. At SOMA, much of the work is gently widening this window, so more of life fits inside the range where you can stay both calm and engaged.

Why do I go numb or shut down under stress?

Shutting down is not weakness or avoidance you are choosing. When your nervous system senses that fighting or fleeing will not work, it can drop into a protective freeze, conserving energy and dampening sensation. This is an ancient survival strategy, wired deep in the body long before thought. The numbness that follows is the aftermath, not a character trait. At SOMA we help your system learn that the threat has passed, so it can gradually come back online and let you feel present and connected again without being overwhelmed.

Can I actually change my nervous system, or am I stuck like this?

You are not stuck, even if it has felt that way for years. The nervous system is shaped by experience, which is precisely why it can be reshaped by new experience. This capacity is called neuroplasticity, and it does not disappear with age. Change tends to come not from insight alone but from repeated, felt moments of safety and regulation that teach your body a new default. At SOMA we build these moments deliberately and patiently, so resilience becomes something your system lives rather than something you have to think about.
