Our Approach

The Body Holds What the Mind Cannot Articulate

At SOMA, we understand that trauma does not live only in memory, it lives in the body. Through breath, awareness, gentle movement, and felt-sense work, we help your nervous system metabolize what the mind alone cannot process. Somatic healing is not an add-on to therapy. It is woven into every session, meeting the body where it is and guiding it toward integration.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Somatic Healing

What is somatic therapy?

Somatic therapy is not an alternative to real treatment. It is treatment that includes the body as a full participant in healing. The word somatic simply means of the body. Rather than working only with thoughts and words, this approach pays attention to sensation, posture, breath, and the subtle signals your nervous system is always sending. Trauma often lives below language, so meeting it there can reach what talking alone cannot. At SOMA we weave somatic awareness into every session, guiding your body toward the integration it has been waiting to complete.

What does it mean that trauma is stored in the body?

It does not mean the memory is trapped in your muscles like a splinter. It means the survival response that fired during an overwhelming event never fully completed, so your nervous system keeps holding the charge. That is why a scent, a tone of voice, or a posture can bring the past rushing back before you have a single thought. This is intelligent, not broken. At SOMA we help the body finish what it could not finish then, so the stored activation can move through and settle rather than staying stuck.

What actually happens in a somatic therapy session?

You will not be asked to relive your worst moments to prove they mattered. A somatic session often begins with simply noticing, where in your body you feel tension, ease, warmth, or numbness. From that felt sense, your therapist guides gentle attention and small experiments in movement or breath, tracking how your system responds. The pace stays inside your window of tolerance, so you are resourcing rather than flooding. At SOMA the aim is not catharsis for its own sake but integration, letting your body discover that it is safe now.

Do I have to talk about what happened in somatic therapy?

No. One of the reasons somatic work helps is that it does not depend on retelling the story. For many people, describing the event in detail reactivates the distress without resolving it. Somatic therapy works with what is present in the body now, the sensations and impulses, rather than the narrative of then. You can heal without ever giving a full account out loud. At SOMA we follow your nervous system's lead and let it set the pace, so nothing is forced before you and your body are ready.

Is somatic therapy right for me if I feel disconnected from my body?

Feeling numb or disconnected is not a barrier to this work. It is often the very reason to begin. Disconnection is a protective strategy your system built when staying fully present felt unsafe, and it deserves respect, not force. Somatic therapy rebuilds that connection slowly, in small and tolerable doses, so your body relearns that sensation can be safe. At SOMA we never push you past what your system can hold. We help you meet your body again at a pace it can trust, one settled moment at a time.
